Fantasy writers have to go the further step in creativity and inventiveness. Your reader has to be introduced to your fantasy world, know how it works to even begin understanding how the characters interact with each other and with their world. Sometimes there is a mistaken belief that fantasy novel is easy to write because everything is made up. But there is a method to all of it. As a genre, fantasy readers are a more demanding lot. But there are a few tips to help fantasy writers get it right.
Establish the fantasy world and its logic
Fantasy worlds have rules that guide their logic as well. What type of characters inhabit this world? Are they evil or good? There are things that the characters can and cannot do. It is important to cover these details so that the reader is not lost. Some of the elements in a fantasy world include:
Telling a brief history of the universe of your story helps set the story’s background. Old rivalries, grudges and so on can be briefly outlined such that the interactions between characters in the present can be put in context
How is life in magical universe? What kind of food is eaten? How do the inhabitants pray and worship? Do inhabitants progress by merit or by class? It is important the reader understands why things are done the way they are in the fantasy world.
How technologically advanced is the fantasy world? What is the role of science? Do they have time travel?
Define the role of magic
Will there be magic in the story, and if so what kind of magic? Magic is typically part of a fantasy story but its extent of use has a big influence on the plot. How potent do you want the magic to be? If one of the protagonists has a magic wand that can enable passing through walls, for example, having the other side barricade themselves in a castle would give make a short one due to superior advantage of one side. Magic should also be consistent in the story.
Take time to develop your characters
Who are the inhabitants of the fantasy world? How do they look like? This is where the identifiable physical and behavioural traits of the fantasy world are described. The different motives of the different characters intrigues the reader, their actions set the story’s pace and their personalities make them likeable or hated. Good character development does half the work in a fantasy story.
