In the interest of being transparent, I want to make it clear that this e-book was gifted to me for free in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. This book is a fantasy and I really loved the writing style.
Captain Nereyda and her first mate, Brynja, lead a band of pirates as they seek out grand adventures and loot vulnerable merchant ships. However, when they attempt an overly ambitious raid, Nereyda and her crew are captured by Commander Erhan of the Imperial navy and separated. Nereyda is pressed into service aboard a ship to patrol the treacherous waters of the Shattered Sea. Meanwhile, Brynja and the rest of the crew are sent to a life of hellish labor deep in an Imperial mining prison camp.
While serving her sentence, Nereyda is shipwrecked on an unknown island. As she explores it, she stumbles into some ancient ruins and finds…something. Whatever it is, it wakes a part of Nereyda that she had not felt before. Something that could help her free the rest of her crew and return to life on the sea, if only she can learn to control it. Unfortunately, Commander Erhan is also on the island. Nereyda must escape him, get off of the island, and rescue her crew before the commander can stop her and before her crew withers away in the oppressive mines.
I chose to review this book because the blurb hooked me from the moment I read the first sentence. Naturally, as I write about time travel and one of my books includes pirates, I was intrigued by the mutual interest and to see what this writer could do with the pirate concept. Book cover is good, would have preferred to have seen more of the black flag though - but that's personal preference.
This story reminds me of Robin Hood mixed with Pirates of the Caribbean - which happen to be two of my favourite stories. The main character is a strong woman and a badass pirate, along with her crew that go on adventures, treasure hunting and a lot of twists and turns.
As a writer of multi-pov books myself, I loved that we got to see inside different characters heads. Captain Nereyda is loyal to her crew of the ship Storm Raven. She's brave, and knows how to handle the sea and manages to sail her ship through dangerous waters. Unfortunately, unbeknown to them, Commander Erhan is hot on their tail and closing in fast.
When they're captured and split up, Nereyda is forced to be the Commender's navigator while her crew is taken to work in the mines. This gritty story has some deep twists and each page keeps you gripped for more. There's fighting, adventure, and twists that prove not everyone will make it through to the end.
Overall, this was a fantastic read and really gripped me from the beginning. Which after my reading slump was a welcome change of pace.
