Okay, I admit it. This book has been sat on my kindle for almost a year. I put of reading it because I got involved with blog tours and other favourites came out and so my TBR pile grew too big. My aim this year is to read everything in order - wish me luck with that. However, I did read this book and I cuss myself for leaving it this long. BECAUSE THIS IS AWESOME.
In the not-too-distant future, the color of your helix tattoo shows exactly how your DNA was modified—green for super-smart scientists, black for pumped-up warriors, white for the immortal Seligo—but Cipher’s red helix is a death sentence. It’s a sign of unstable DNA, which is probably the reason she can manipulate electricity.
When she was eight years old, Cipher made the mistake of showing her uncle the tattoo. In return, he killed her parents and tried to kidnap her. She’s been on the run ever since, and twelve long years later, Cipher is tired of hiding. Survival isn’t enough anymore. She wants her life back.
Hacking into the Citadel mainframe is a huge risk, but it pays off when she finds a database on red helixes. Before she can copy it, she loses control of her power, charring her last processor, and the only person in the Arizona Voids that can get her back online is her oldest friend, Knightly. She hasn’t seen him in person since she started running, and Knightly 2.0 is fully upgraded with a six-pack and knee-melting smile.
For a girl like Cipher, trust doesn’t come easily, but Knightly makes her yearn for a life she knows she can’t have, especially when every secret she reveals endangers them both.
HOLY CRAP! Please someone let me read this again because it was phenomenal. I read this in one weekend while visiting my brother and it was extremely hard to tear myself away for things like, breakfast and dinner. Aileen definitely knows how to suck you in.
This book is split between two main characters; Cipher and Knight. At first I totally thought Knight was a girl - how wrong that turned out to be. Knight is a soldier who has been searching for his long lost friend who can control electricity, Cipher is a 20yr old Red Helix who has been in hiding since she was 12.
Cipher is living in a camper and trying to be discreet however after she stays too long on a hack into one of the mainframes she knows she's got Helix's on the way to her. She knows she has to leave but on her way out friend Mona gets in her way and convinces her to stay just a little longer.
Knight is a double agent working for the Helix's and the Ravens. He is tasked with finding a girl names Emma and when a tip goes off that they might've found her he does everything he can to get to her. However he had no idea he still had feelings or that she would be the hacker he had been sending stuff too.
They end up meeting and escaping lockdown, while on the run they learn more about one another, their powers and her uncle. I love how this story progresses and it's an ending you'll be happy about too.
