This book has been so well received that reviewers at Northern Crime Reviews say it should be converted into a TV drama series.
IN A WORLD OF LIES, ONE MAN WANTS THE TRUTH
Fearing for his life, journalist Philip Mangan has gone into hiding from the Chinese agents who have identified him as a Western spy. His reputation and life are in tatters. But when he is caught in a terrorist attack in East Africa and a shadowy Chinese figure approaches him in the dead of night with information on the origins of the attack, Mangan is suddenly back in the eye of the storm.
Meanwhile, thousands of miles away on a humid Hong Kong night, a key British Intelligence source is murdered minutes after meeting spy Trish Patterson. From Washington, D.C. to the hallowed halls of Oxford University and dusty African streets, a sinister power is stirring which will use Mangan and Patterson as its pawns -- if they survive.
Deeply steeped in tension and paranoia, Adam Brookes's follow-up to his award-nominated debut is a remarkable, groundbreaking spy thriller.
In Northern Crime Reviews, the Sun newspaper stated that it cements Adam Brooke’s name in the hall of fame of leading spy novelists. It added that he belongs to the same category as John le Carre, a reknown espionage writer.
Charles Cumming says that the author is the real deal as far as writing near-authentic and compelling fiction is concerned. This is because of his apparent familiarity with operations of the British secret service and knowledge of China. However, it is the ability of the author to tell stories naturally that most endears him to his fans.
This novel is a carefully plotted affair. It is a sequel to Adam Brooke’s ‘Night Heron’ that was published in 2014. The story is about a part-time spy and correspondent named Philip Mangan. He is sent to Ethiopia to investigate the Chinese influence on African politics. The events that he comes across while in Africa are scary and unexpected.
At one point, he manages to escape miraculously from a bombing at a local café. After that, he comes across a former Chinese spy who had become a traitor. The traitor gives him classified information. Mangan shares his important find with the officials at the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) in the United Kingdom.
SIS is amused by the help that Mangan manages to provide. As a reward, Mangan receives enhanced training while on the job. At the same time, he is given a new assignment- tracking down the Chinese agent. At the beginning of his new assignment, things go as planned. He lays his hands on information about new laser weapons and a secret fighter aircraft.
However, he would not enjoy his new-found intelligence for long. Events at top Chinese government agencies would unsettle him. There is obvious infighting among top government chiefs. Those that he had considered friends in the past became foes. The fact that he faced double and triple crosses only made matters worse.
The competing factions in the Chinese government make life hard for the protagonist. People who love crime, drama and action thriller movies and books will find this one suitable. As readers are engrossed in its pages, they cannot help but anticipate the agent’s next hardships.
Heads will spin as readers try to join all the dots in the drama. It will make readers wake up early and stay up late. It is a thrilling read that ticks all the boxes of modern spy drama.
