I still don't know how I managed to find this wonderful lady through the internet, but I did and we got talking. Then we had a skype chat, which might have been a bit awkward at first and a little short due to Megan having to work and the five hour time difference but it was definitely worth it. So lets see what she had to say to my questions!
1. Why did you start blogging?
It was 2011 and I had just been accepted into a program through the French Ministry of Education to teach English in Martinique. I started blogging to record my experience and share my journey with friends and family at home. I loved writing, my followers grew, and I got a lot of positive feedback on my writing voice. I knew that it was something that I wanted to continue with!
2. What was your job before you started your own business?
So many! I had a lot of part-time or temporary jobs because I was SO resistant to anything that resembled a "normal" life. I worked in customer service, taught French, and was a nanny for a while.
3. Was it scary to start charging for a service on your site?
It was - even scarier to say my prices on the phone! I started out charging pretty low prices until I felt confident enough to charge more.
4. How can someone get started in copy writing?
Start researching - books, blogs, people who teach copywriting. Read about sales and the psychology of selling. Then just start practicing! Offer your services for free to gain experience (and testimonials!) until you feel confident charging. Just don't let yourself get caught up in thinking that you need to know EVERYTHING before you can get started. Start before you're ready. You don't need to be perfect. The best way to learn is to DO it!
5. Is there anything you wish you could do that doesn't fit in with your blog/websites niche?
I'd love to write about topics other than copywriting and business building... I have so many interests that I wish I could just write about all of them! Traveling, language acquisition, wine, Harry Potter.... ;)
6. What platform do you use to host your website?
My web developer hosts my website. I don't understand how it all works, so that's all I know!
7. How do you come up with content ideas for your site?
I listen to my audience! I ask them what questions they have about copywriting and what they are struggling with. Then I base my content off of those ideas!
8. How do you keep organised?
I use Google Drive for all of my documents, Google calendar and Acuity Scheduling to keep my schedule organized, and Evernote to store all of my ideas in one place.
9. Was running your own business your dream job?
Not until recently! I had never even considered it until a few years ago because I never thought of myself as a "businessy" type of person. The world of online entrepreneurship and coaching was all new to me. Then I fell in love with the idea because it allows me to do something that I love, have time freedom, and be location independent, working with amazing people all over the world.
10. Advice for people reading this interview?
Two things: 1. Start before you're ready. Starting your own business can be scary, and you'll never feel 100% ready. Step outside of your comfort zone and take action -- that's how you will learn, and that's how you will grow. 2. Get support. Ask for the support you need from friends and family and hire a good coach. Even though you're working for yourself, you don't have to do it all alone!
Well that's the beautiful Megan, I'd like to thank her for being a part of my Interview series and for being wonderful to talk to. You can catch her at http://meganschopieray.com/
