Today I have the love Laura on my blog. She has a lovely little corner of the internet full of book reviews and Author Interviews. I recently featured over there, and thought it was only fair I returned the favour. Plus I do have a soft spot for an amazing book blog. Over to Laura;
Okay, so I have a confession to make. A big secret. Don’t tell anyone though…. promise?
Here goes. I can be influenced by a pretty cover. Yup, I have been known to literally judge a book by its cover. Please don’t get me wrong, I know there is SO much more to a book than it’s outside, and as a bookworm I love getting lost in a fictional world. There is real power in words- they can make a bad day better, offer escape from a difficult situation or provide comfort, humour or company. A strong storyline and characters bursting with personality are the makers of fantastic books, there’s no doubt about that, but is it so wrong to also love a book because of a pretty cover?
I really don’t think so. I know this subject divides people and I get why, I really do. Authors work damn hard on their books, and they should be chosen because of the storyline and beautiful words nestled in the cover, not because it is aesthetically pleasing. BUT, if you’re anything like me, when your eye is caught by a bright, pretty cover it can be so difficult to resist.
Most of the covers I love are actually by authors who produce fantastic books that I’d buy anyway, but I find their stories even more magical when they are encased in bright, eye-catching covers. I take great pride in my bookshelf, which is brimming with beautiful covers. An attractive book cover has also helped me discover many new authors- for example, I picked up Mhairi McFarlane’s Here’s Looking at You because of the bold colouring. From that, I discovered a fantastic author whose books I love and now, I’ll buy her stories no matter what they look like, but, that original snap decision came because of the look of her cover. I’m like a literary loving magpie – if a bright, sparkly cover catches my eye then I can’t help but swoop in and grab that delight.
So I want to share with you my favourite covers of the year so far. There have been so many lovely ones this year, but these are my personal favourites and have brightened up my bookshelf. They are all fantastic reads too which I would heartily recommend!
