Guest Post: A little about the inspiration behind the series
I wanted the Mortiswood Tales books to have their roots in my hometown even though the series is fantasy. So, the setting is part in Thanet in Kent, part set in a magical wood (Mortiswood!), as well as crossovers into realms of Norse myth. Here is one of the real life places which feature in Mortiswood:
This is The Stone Pier in Margate. It is a significant feature in the Mortiswood Tales series. It was originally built between 1810 - 1815, and parts have had to be rebuilt over the years due to storm damage, and bomb damage in WWII.
This is Botany Bay, in Kingsgate, at sunrise. There are some quite scary scenes which take place here. The beach is beautiful, I love how natural and slightly wild it looks, which may seem a strange thing to say about a beach but it is nice that it doesn’t have a concrete promenade.
One of my favourite characters is the wolf which appears in book one. The wolf, called a Vallesm is very much influenced by my pet dog. He’s a Siberian husky and having him around makes it easy to visualise how the Vallesm would move. Here’s are a couple of pictures of him, I think he’s a cutie but then I am biased!
The mythology influence throughout the series is primarily Norse, with the appearance of goddesses, creatures, and some of the realms from Norse mythology. I can’t say too much as I don’t want to give the story away but there are some good, some bad, and some really nasty characters!
I wanted the Mortiswood Tales series to have a dark, magical feel to it and I hope that comes through!
