Dystopian is a genre that I completely love to read. I have thought about trying to write my own novel in this genre but have zero ideas as to what the story could actually be. So today's challenge could be interesting.
Write a short dystopian scene.
In dystopian stories, society has often fallen into ruin, with the majority of characters living in poverty. These characters may be motivated to action by hunger and other base needs, but that doesn’t make them less than human. Today, practice bridging the gap between primal motivations and emotional needs to create a well-rounded character.
The baker was not at his usual post and in fact couldn't be seen from her position at all. Her heart leapt at the chance for food. Her hands reached up towards the warm rolls and her fingers snatched one away before anyone noticed. She stayed peering into the window so it wasn't obvious she now had one sitting in her pocket.
"Get away with you," shouted the baker as he came rushing to the window, unaware she had already taken one. She span on her heels and fled down the alley.
She didn't have to go far to find a secluded door stop to sit. Pulling out the sweet roll her mouth watered as the smell wafted into her nostrils. The first bite was heavenly, and she ate all too quickly and found she had made herself feel sick. Footsteps made her jump to her feet, if the Guard caught her she would be beaten, and she fled down into the shadows.
I have no idea how good that is. I am writing what came to me. Let me know your thoughts in the comments?
